One of the featured guests of College President Raymond Angeli is Senator Robert Mellow. Also in attendance will be representatives for Senator Arlen Specter, Senator Robert Casey, State Senator Lisa Baker, State Representative Mike Peifer and representatives from Wayne and Pike Counties.
Lackawanna College will be expanding it's presence in the Lake Region area of Wayne County by moving it's center from Honesdale to the soon-to-be renovated Hawley Silk Mill. The College plans on opening Fall of 2010.
Hawley Silk Mill, LLC is an investment group made up of local investors who have a vested interest in the community of Hawley. The focus of the team is to make the Hawley Silk Mill a viable and successful location to conduct business and preserve the historic character of the building for generations to come.
The vision for the project includes reestablishing the building as a regional economic engine, creating a workforce development and education facility, and building a lifestyle retail center. To that end, Lackawanna College will relocate and expand into the 16,000 square foot top floor of the building and serve the region as a workforce-training center and continuing education facility. The second floor of the building will provide office space, including individual office suites, providing shared services for professionals looking to open branch offices or secondary offices in the region. Lackawaxen River of the Year and 2010 Lackawaxen Sojourn planning underway
02/13/2010
Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, DCNR, named the Lackawaxen "River of the Year 2010" "A recreational treasure renowned for its fly-fishing and canoeing, the Lackawaxen harbors a wealth of bird and animal species". said DCNR Acting Secretary John Quigley. "Selecting the Lackawaxen River better enables DCNR to stress the value of healthy forests and greenways and encourage stream-side planting under its Tree Vitalize program", said Acting Secretary Quigley."Whether it's educating the public on issues impacting the Pocono Plateau, such as gas drilling's impact on the environment and water resources, or touting tree planting, the Lackawaxen is an excellent teaching tool. This award is special because it’s the first time a smaller stream or river has been honored.
The Lackawaxen River Conservancy (TLRC) and it's partners will organize several events throughout the year 2010, including a paddling trip and a river clean up in partnership with the Wayne County Historical Society. The first ever Lackawaxen River Sojourn is planned for June 12,13,14th 2010. Dick Rhodes is chairman of the sojourn planning committee for the Conservancy. A number of events, in addition to the sojourn, are planned to celebrate the River of the Year designation including a partnership with the Eagle Institute, a tour of the dams and headwaters of the Lackawaxen, a fall foliage train ride and a river clean up day. The TLRC is working to make these events river awareness activities, as well as recreational celebrations honoring this prestigious designation.
