“The Hawley Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce Presents Tom Chapin in Concert”
02/22/2010
HAWLEY, PA: The Hawley Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce that Tom Chapin will be live in concert on Friday, March 19th at the Wallenpaupack Area High School. The concert will be at 7 PM, and doors will open at 6:30 PM. All seats are $12 for ages 1 and over, and lap held infants are free.
Adult albums and kids’ albums, contemporary folk and pop, Tom Chapin’s music spans styles and generations. For more than thirty years and through twenty compact discs, Chapin has entertained, amused and enlightened audiences of all ages with life-affirming original songs told in a sophisticated array of musical styles. Tom’s remarkable musicianship, great songwriting and personal warmth shine through whether he’s performing in a concert hall, an outdoor festival, a school, in front of a symphony orchestra or in an intimate coffeehouse.
Tom’s adult concerts and recordings are sparked by strong, intelligent songwriting with clear, engaging vocals and the intricate, melodic guitar work that has become his trademark. He has recorded nine albums of adult-oriented material. The newest, Let The Bad Times Roll, was released in July 2009. The New York Times calls Tom Chapin “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music.” He says: “Mine is not a traditional music, but it comes from a tradition. My musical heroes are people like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie who wrote and sang real songs for real people; for everyone, old, young, and in between.”
Tom has gained widespread critical and popular acclaim for his recordings aimed at 4 to 11 year-olds and their families. Tom and his collaborators John Forster, Michael Mark and Jon Cobert have created a body of songs which are quickly becoming children’s classics. His family albums have been recognized with awards from the American Library Association, Parents’ Choice, the New York Music Awards, the National Association of Parenting Publications and Parents Magazine. Five of his family recordings have received Grammy nominations for Best Musical Album For Children, including Some Assembly Required, Tom’s newest family recording. Billboard magazine calls Chapin “the best family artist around.” A new family CD is in the works.
Chapin’s live performances engage the hearts, minds and imaginations of children and adults alike. Parents Magazine says, “Nobody today is writing and performing better kids’ songs than Tom Chapin . . . the Pied Piper of children’s music.” Elementary school teachers across North America have incorporated Chapin’s songs into their curriculum, finding them accessible and adaptable to classroom study and interaction.
Tom is also a beloved narrator of children’s books on tape. Three of his narrations won Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word Album for Children: Mama Don’t Allow in 2001, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly in 2002, and The Train They Call The City Of New Orleans in 2004. His narration of The Fox Went Out On A Chilly Night was released in 2006.
His varied career has taken him to Broadway as lead in the musical “Pump Boys and Dinettes,” off-Broadway as musical director of both “Cotton Patch Gospel” and “Harry Chapin: Lies & Legends” and on television as host of “Make A Wish” on ABC, and as host of the documentary series “National Geographic Explorer.”
In addition, Tom works tirelessly on behalf of many charitable organizations. He is on the Board of Directors of World Hunger Year, a hunger organization founded in 1975 by Tom’s late brother, singer/songwriter/humanitarian Harry Chapin. He is active in environmental causes; and is working to get music and the arts back in schools.
Please call (570) 226-3191or visit the Chamber office to purchase tickets for this exciting event! The Chamber is located in the Lakeside Level of the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitor Center. The Chamber hours of operation are 7:30 AM- 3:30 PM.

02/13/2010
Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, DCNR, named the Lackawaxen "River of the Year 2010" "A recreational treasure renowned for its fly-fishing and canoeing, the Lackawaxen harbors a wealth of bird and animal species". said DCNR Acting Secretary John Quigley. "Selecting the Lackawaxen River better enables DCNR to stress the value of healthy forests and greenways and encourage stream-side planting under its Tree Vitalize program", said Acting Secretary Quigley."Whether it's educating the public on issues impacting the Pocono Plateau, such as gas drilling's impact on the environment and water resources, or touting tree planting, the Lackawaxen is an excellent teaching tool. This award is special because it’s the first time a smaller stream or river has been honored.

Lake Region Urgent Care Coming to Hawley;
Operational by Spring 2010
Beginning in the spring of 2010, advanced medical services will be available
within the Borough of Hawley. Lake Region Urgent Care will occupy the top floor
of the Hawley Medical Center on the corner of Main and Spruce Streets at the
north end of town. Additional offerings include new x-ray equipment, a medical
lab, and urgent care services. The facility will be managed by Urgent Care
America and operated by a group of local doctors, which includes Dr. Roman
Matlaga and Dr. Bill Krah, who believe the Hawley location is critical to providing
medical care to local camps, seasonal visitors, residents of the borough, and
neighboring communities.
Urgent care facilities offer a unique service as they are able to accommodate
minor emergencies and are traditionally open 7 days/week. Urgent care centers
offer advanced medical care, longer hours of operation, and have been found to
be an excellent resource to help deter the ever rising cost of healthcare. Benefits
include less time to receive care, radiology (x-ray services) on site, lab services,
and walk-in access to expanded medical services performed by highly trained
professionals. The urgent care will also provide key medical support services to
local physicians within the borough.
Expected hours of operation will be Monday through Saturday 8 am – 8 pm,
Sunday 9 am - 5 pm, and closed Easter, Christmas & Thanksgiving.
The architectural design of the 3,000 square foot second floor will include four
exam rooms for general patient use and one procedure room for laceration
repair, fracture care, and other minor surgical procedures. In addition, Lake
Region Urgent Care will feature a state-of-the-art computerized radiology suite
capable of processing up to forty-one x-rays per hour. This equipment enables
the facility to share x-ray images with local physicians and hospitals for
consultation or referral.
The first floor of the center will be home to Comprehensive Physical Therapy
(CPT). Comprehensive Physical Therapy plans to move from its current location
at 54 Main Street to the new medical building and begin expanded operations
this month. With the addition of the Lake Region Urgent Care, the Hawley
Medical Center is fully occupied.
Suzanne Atcavage of CPT states, “The goal of the Hawley Medical Center is to
complement and enhance existing medical services and has the support of local
physicians in the area. By incorporating a medical lab and a computerized x-ray
system into the facility, we are bringing important services to the Lake Region
and providing support to our highly qualified medical community.”
CPT, operating in downtown Hawley since 2001, was the first independent;
physical therapist owned and operated rehabilitative services business in the
area specializing in physical and occupational therapy.
The spring 2009 visioning process, sponsored by the Downtown Hawley
Partnership, underscored the need for a medical center in Hawley. Area
residents listed enhanced medical services and urgent care as top priorities for
the community.
The Hawley Medical Center Project is being developed by a group of local
investors operating as Hudson Street, LLC with financing provided by the DIME
Bank.
